Meanwhile down under, I'm working on a pulley/winch system to tilt over my 7m tower so I can put the cantenna & rpi on top :)
Love to see a picture of that. I'm going to have to re-design my antenna mast. It's gotten cumbersome and heavy and I want to do something totally different. I'm thinking a tall (maybe 40 feet) steel mast based on the ground. But I would need a way to raise and lower it and that's what I haven't figured out yet.

@jepolch - Interested to see how you go with an active usb extender. I tried one or two and couldn't get the rPi to detect the rtl dongle
Did you try it with a powered USB hub? I have a couple of those and if the Pi doesn't detect the dongle at the end of the 30 foot cable I'll plug the cable and the Pi into the hub and see if that works. Somebody on FlightAware is having success with it.

Very neat and powerful Mode S decoder and feeder. It features also a very complete stat page.

Run it like that:

./modesdeco2 --gain 49.6 --sbs10001 10001 --avrmlat 30002 --beast 30005 --rbs --msg 30003 --web 8080 --location 43.67:10.41 --agc on

I completed the colinear today. I tested it with JetVision 1090 and it worked fine. It's very windy today and I have a cold, so I won't go up on the roof. Maybe tomorrow, though.

Looks great! Will give it a try. Can it work if I already have dump1090 or dump1090-mutability installed? Do I have to do any configuration to stop dump1090 after i install this new decoder?
 
I don't know why everyone thinks I'm building it! :) As I said above, it doesn't look very challenging.

I just finished building a colinear based on the attached pic. I am tired of messing with it now, so I'll take pictures of it tomorrow. It came out really nice. And it feels fragile, because it's so spindly. I will get some 1/2 inch PVC tube to put it in.
Well every one thinks you are going to built it because you have been enthusiastically building different antennas.

For me in the first place i do not understand the advantage of this design. It's whip is 58mm, nearly ¼ wavelength, and they are trying to bring down impedance to 75 ohm by a hairpin. Why not to use 69mm (¼ wavelength) whip with ground plane, which inherently has 75 ohm impedance. This is a brain-teaser without any advantage (aparently) for reception of adsb signal.
 
I think I see some advantage in this design: The hairpin provides a discharge path for lightning surges induced in whip, but has high impedance for RF signal hence does not let RF pass to ground.

In this case the groundplane disk and braid of coax (which are bonded togather electrically), should be grounded by an earthing conductor run down & connected to an earthing rod.

How I fire "this"?
If i fire a gun on "this", then "this" will also get killed. :D

Well apart from above joke, can you post console commands to kill & fire? I know only a little bit of linux.

I think the best way would be to run 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure dump1090-mutability' and at the first screen tell it "no" to start dump1090-mutability automatically. Then, if you want to go back to using dump, run the command and tell it "yes".

as root:

cd folder
wget URL
tar xvf filename.tar
killall dump1090
killall dump1090-mutability
./modesdeco2 --gain 49.6 --avrmlat 30002 --beast 30005 --rbs --msg 30003 --web 8080 --location 43.67:10.41 --agc on &

press enter. close the shell and you are done :p

I am also feeding to a MacMini but I run VMWare with Win7 which I would like to get away from. Any pointers to installing Mono/VirtualRadar server would be appreciated.

I'm running mono-frame-work 3.0.5 and Virtualradar 2.0.2 on macosx 10.9.5,
newer versions of MONO and VRS did not work.
